Hawaiian Copelandia Panaeolus Cyanescens grow kit
How can you easily grow Hawaiian magic mushrooms in the form of a grow kit? This has been a search for years. It’s slightly more challenging than growing Cubensis magic mushrooms, but now you can give growing Panaeolus cyanescens a go with this easy-to-use grow kit. A few key factors are important:
- Work cleanly!
- Plenty of fresh air: Ventilate the kit twice a day.
- If the humidity level is high, you should humidify the grow kit twice daily.
- Do not spray water directly on the pins or the mushrooms.
Warning: Due to cold storage in our warehouse, the substrate may have some blue and green spots on arrival. This does not indicate any contamination in your kit. If in doubt, simply send a picture of your Hawaii grow kit to our support department, and we can tell you immediately if all is fine.
The Hawaiian Copelandia grow kit contains the following items:
- The 1200-ml mycelium box contains Panaeolus cyanescens, a Hawaiian strain.
- Topsoil (casing layer) a black, soil-like substance
- Growing bag
- Paperclip
Additional items we suggest using.
The Hawaiian Copelandia Panaeolus Cyanescens grow kit comes with cultivation instructions.
Work cleanly!
Clean your work area and wash your hands. Use gloves and a face mask if you have one. Work with straight arms to keep the kit an arm’s length away. This practice helps to avoid inhaling or coughing into the kit or the grow bag.
Setting up your Hawaiian Copelandia grow kit is simple.
- Remove the contents of the kit. Take out the substrate container, the topsoil (casing layer) container, the growbag (moisture bag), and the paperclip.
- Spread the black topsoil (casing layer) over the substrate, smoothing it evenly over the surface.
- Place the kit in the grow bag.
- Spray potable water over the top layer of soil until it is wet but not soaked.
- Add fresh air and close the bag with the paper clip.
- Each day, mist the surface of the grow kit and introduce fresh air by squeezing the bag and opening it again, allowing fresh air to enter.
- 5–17 days after starting your Copelandia growk kit, pins (small mushrooms) will start to form.
- Avoid spraying directly on the pins or the mushrooms. Instead, remove the mushroom grow kit, add fresh air, lightly spray the bag, add the kit, and then close the bag again.
- Most mushrooms will grow fully and be ready to pick 5–7 days after pinning.
- Prepare the kit for the next rinse by spraying the top layer with plenty of water. Spray until there is one or two inches of water at the bottom of the grow kit. You can pour the water out of the kit when the new flush starts to grow.
Set-Up
The setup or positioning of your Hawaiian Copelandia kit is very important.
- Your growing area should be clean and disinfected.
- Choose a spot off the ground, preferably between knee and eye level. Or on top of a cupboard.
- Do not grow up in your bathroom, toilet, or basement. These areas often contain other molds or bacteria.
- Do not place the kit in a box, container, or other enclosed area. The grow kit needs fresh air and ventilation. Without regular fresh air, the mycelium will perish.
- Do not place the kit in direct sunlight. A bright spot in the house is perfect.
Temperature
The fruiting temperature for Panaeolus cyanescens mushrooms is around 24 degrees Celsius, more or less the same as when you grow Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms. If you keep your grow kit at this temperature, it will thrive. We found that kits perform poorly below 19 degrees.
- Colonization temperature 26-29°C
- Fruiting temperature: 23-26°C
Fresh Air Exchange (FAE)
The mycelium and mushrooms need fresh air to develop, so it is important to air the grow bag twice a day. You can add fresh air by doing the following:
- Close your doors and windows to avoid drafts.
- Wash your hands or use gloves.
- Open the grow bag by removing the clip and unfolding the top.
- Now squeeze and open the bag to add fresh air.
- Do this three to four times, and the kit will have enough fresh air for the rest of the day.
- Fold the top and close it with the paperclip.
- Ventilate the kit in the morning and at night.
Humidity
After adding fresh air, it is time to increase the humidity in the grow bag. Mist the top soil of the kit and the inside of the grow bag to achieve this. Make it moist, not wet. After adding fresh air, it is time to increase the humidity in the grow bag. Wet the top soil of the kit and the interior of the grow bag to achieve this. Make it damp, not wet.
When the first small mushrooms start to form in the grow kit, remove the substrate kit from the humidifier bag and spray only into the bag! Hawaiian Copelandia mushrooms do not like to get wet and will stop growing. Never spray the mushrooms.
Harvesting
The perfect time to harvest your Hawaiian Copelandia kit is about 24 to 36 hours after the Panaeolus cyanescens mushrooms have shed their spores. The mushroom caps will turn a slight grayish white, and you will also notice some black spores on them. Time to pick your mushrooms!
In contrast to Psilocybe cubensis, Panaeolus cyanescens lacks a veil beneath its cap. The caps simply open and drop their spores.
How do you harvest the mushrooms from the Copelandia mushroom kit?
Knock the Panaeolus cyanescens mushrooms gently over and snap them at the base. They will detach from the substrate and are ready to use.
Spore prints of Panaeolus cyanescens Copelandia
Opening the caps is the best way to obtain a black spore print from Panaeolus cyanescens. This allows you to store the genetics of the mushroom strain and study the spores under a microscope.
-
- Harvest a mushroom that has its cap open.
- Cut the cap off the stem.
- Place the cap, with the gills facing downwards, on an alufoil or a microscope slide.
- Cover the cap and foil with a glass bowl or jar.
- Wait 1-2 days
- Remove the cap from the surface.
- Your print is ready!
- Secure the print by folding the foil and placing it in a zip-lock bag.

History
- Not much is known about the history of Panaeolus cyanescens. There are no archaeological finds of the mushrooms. It frequently coexisted with other well-known mushrooms like Psilocybe cubensis and Amanita muscaria, likely serving as substitutes.
- Indonesians have used Panaeolus cyanescens for rituals, celebrations, and recreation. Indonesian batik artists drew inspiration from Pan Cyans, which accounts for the vibrant and hallucinogenic design of their work.
- In the 1980s, tourists in Bali, Java, and Sumatra purchased the mushrooms as their popularity grew.
- The indigenous people of Samoa gave the mushrooms various names, based on the mental state they induce or the cultivation method. For example, Taepovi means ‘cow patty’, Pulouaitu means ‘spirit house, and Faleaitu means ‘comedy’. Apparently, Samoan youth discovered the psychoactive qualities of the Panaeolus cyanescens mushroom in the 1970s.
- During the 1990’s, Panaeolus cyanescens appeared in the Netherlands, spread by home growers and shortly after in ‘smartshops’ under the name Hawaiian or Balinees.
- Ironically, Panaeolus cyanescens primarily originates from tropical climates; researchers collected the specimen for its psilocybin from a garden in France.
- Other names for Panaeolus cyanescens include blauender dungerling, falterdungerling (German), jambur/jamur (Indonesian), and tenkech (Chol).
Taxonomic history
Berkeley and Broome named it Agaricus cyanescens in 1871. Bresadola from the Philippines named it Copelandia papilionacea years later, and Singer named it Copelandia cyanescens in 1951. Saccardo named the species Panaeolus cyanescens in 1887, which is now its official name.
Responsible use
Only grow mushrooms if it’s legal in your country. We designed the grow kits for small-scale home cultivation and to provide spore prints for research.
Panaeolus cyanescens is known to have higher concentrations of alkaloids than other mushroom species. Be careful and read our responsible use page on harm reduction.
