Enigma is also known as Brainiac. Currently, there are several different and newer versions of Enigma magic mushrooms on the market, but this is the original version.

This fungus forms into wonderful shapes that do not resemble the cubensis it originally mutated out of. From here, we won’t call these fruits magic mushrooms but fruitbodies, as they best describe what we are talking about!

What do you need to know?

• Due to its lab origin, it is a sterile type of magic mushroom and thus will unlikely produce spores.
• Harvest when the growth feels firm, similar to a slightly underinflated basketball.
• Avoid allowing larger fruit blobs to grow excessively long, as this could lead to internal decay.

How can I correctly store the Enigma grow kit?

Start the cultivation process immediately for optimal results. If you start growing later, you may store the grow kit in the refrigerator (2°C to 8°C) for 2 weeks. First, wrap the grow kit in a clean (plastic) shopping bag and close it well.

You need

• Misting Bottle: The humidity level requires a misting bottle.
• Potable water—for misting and soaking
• Maintain a clean environment to prevent the contamination of other fungi and bacteria (microorganisms).

How to prepare

• Close any open windows. Wind or draft may bring in microorganisms that can contaminate the Psilocybe cubensis Enigma Magic Mushroom grow kit.
• When you take the grow box with the cake from its carton box, put it on a disinfected surface. If the surface is not clean, microorganisms may attach to the grow box and begin to grow inside the bag, thereby contaminating the grow box.
• Make sure you work with clean hands and forearms. We recommend using surgical gloves and a suitable disinfectant when handling the Enigma kit. You should use a facemask to avoid breathing into the grow bag and onto the cake.

Instructions

Once your kit arrives, try to set it up immediately. If that’s impossible, refrigerate your kit in an airtight plastic bag at 2-6°C to induce “hibernation mode.” You can store it in the fridge for up to two weeks.

1. Remove the lid and fill the grow box with water until it’s full. Next, replace the lid and refrigerate the water for approximately 10 hours.
2. After 10 hours, take the lid off again, clean it under running water, and save it for later. Then, pour the excess water out of the box.
3. Pour approximately 150 ml of clean tap water into the grow bag located next to the growbox. Put the grow kit inside and use the spray bottle to mist the sides of the bag. Try to maintain a humidity level of 95-100% throughout the entire growth cycle.
4. Fold the top of the grow bag and secure the fold with the paperclips. Keep the kit in a bright place away from direct sunlight, ideally at 22–25 °C.
5. Ventilate the kit by opening it. Press the sides of the bag together to release the old air, then pull them apart again to let in fresh air. This way, you will remove the CO2 buildup at the bottom of the bag.
6. Fruitbodies should be ready for harvesting after 3-5 weeks. Once you get to harvesting, take all the fruit—even the tiny ones. The Enigma is challenging to pick as you don’t see mushrooms, just coral-like structures. Follow the growth cycle and harvest the enigma about a week after it has formed. You should rely on your intuition and begin probing around to gauge its solidity, as it may feel akin to a slightly underinflated basketball. Remember that certain regions with denser coral-like growths may or may not remain solid, and avoid allowing it to deteriorate over night.
7. After the first harvest, refresh the kit for the next cycle. One kit is good for at least two growth cycles. To reuse, go through steps 1–7 all over again.

Temperature

The ideal temperature is 24 °C. Do not have the temperature drop below 21°C, and do not exceed 29°C. To keep the temperature from dropping below 21°C, you can use a Thermo Heating Mat to maintain the ideal temperature. A thermomat is a must-have in the winter or colder regions of the world.

Light

The Enigma Magic Mushroom Grow Kit only needs light for the mycelium to ‘understand’ it has reached the surface. Only then, fruitbodies will grow.

A few hours of fluorescent/artificial light or indirect sunlight a day is more than enough. Direct sunlight kills the mycelium, so avoid the sun to shine directly on the grow kit.

Water / Ventilation

The humidity in the bag is good as long as you see condensation on the sides of the growbag. if there is no condensation this means that the temperature is too low (less then 21 degrees) or that it needs more water.

If it needs more water open up the bag, squeeze the bag together to refresh the air and then give it a 1-4 sprays of water.

Do not spray directly on the cake but spray one time against every side of the bag.Right after misting, close the bag again with the paperclips.

Fruitbodies

If the conditions are optimal, the fruitbodies can appear between 14 and 28 days. This Enigma grows slower than others.

Flushes

The fruitbodies come up in groups also called flushes or growth cycles. This can be a small or large flush.  Fruitbodies are rarely ripe at the same time.

You can get more than one flush out of a kit. The first two flushes are the largest. When more flushes come, they will be smaller than the previous one.

Picking Fruitbodies that grow from the sides

Fruitbodies grow where the light reaches and where there is little penetrating resistance. Because the cake has light shining on the sides, the fruitbodies might also grow there.

It is hard to counter this, and it can be allowed. Some growers wrap the sides of the grow box in aluminium foil to keep the sides dark, but this doesn’t always work well.

When fruitbodies grow there, they can be picked just before you soak the kit:

Clean hands! Take the grow box out of the bag and place it upside down on your other hand.

Wiggle the plastic box so that the cake falls out onto your hand. The plastic box can be placed on a disinfected surface.

Now, you have this hand free to pick the fruitbodies from the sides of the cake. When all the fruitbodies are picked, you can place the cake back in the plastic box and move on to the soaking process.

Soaking

After all the fruitbodies have been picked, you prepare the kit for the next flush. Again, with disinfected hands or gloves, take the grow box out of the grow bag. Fill the box with fresh, potable water.

Take the lid out of the ziplock bag and use it to close the grow box. Place the closed grow box in a soaking bag, or use your own clean plastic shopping bag and wrap it around the box.

Close it well and place it in a refrigerator (2°C to 8°C) for 8-12 hours. This is called the soaking process. Water will soak through the cake, preparing it for the next flush.

During the soaking, you can hang the grow bag with the micron filter, upside down to dry.

Make sure to hang it upside down so no microorganisms will access the bag. Many growers prefer to use new and unused grow bags after every flush, or to desinfect it with alcohol before reusing it.

After 8-12 hours take grow box out from the fridge and unpack it.

Next Flush

To continue, follow the same steps 1 – 7 as before when you started the process for the first time. Several days later, a new flush will appear.

You can get at least 2 flushes out of a Enigma Magic mushroom grow kit. If you are experienced in cultivating, you can get more flushes from a kit.
